Suicide Club

What the hell is wrong with Japanese people?  I mean, damn.  Godzilla movies, the animated schoolgirl porn, the seizure inducing commercials, what the fuck are they doing over there?  Japanese movies in general tend to be batshit insane, but Suicide Club probably takes the prize.

The movies opens with a crowd of 54 schoolgirls happily throwing themselves in front of a Tokyo subway train, spraying gallons of blood all over the subway platform and the rush hour commuters.  They sure do love their arterial spray in Japan.  In the wake of the subway incident, a wave of individual and mass suicides sweeps Japan, with rolls made of hundreds of pieces of human skin found at the scenes.  The cops proceed to investigate, and then the mindfuck begins.  The cops discover a mysterious website that has dots representing all the suicides and getting mysterious phone calls from a child who clears his/her throat after every sentence.  There's also some connection to a band of 10 year old girls called Dessart and their hit song "Mail Me."  As well as a false villain and a lot of other stuff that doesn't make sense.

This film doesn't really have a central character.  It's loosely center on the cops working the case, along with the girlfriend of one of the suicides and a hacker who calls herself the Bat.  It's full of scenes of gory suicide mayhem, the best of which is undoubtedly the scene at the high school where a bunch of kids form a suicide club as a joke and end of jumping off the roof in short order, and exploding into clouds of bloody mist when they hit the ground.  Man, this movie has the most fake blood since Evil Dead 2.

I think there's a serious film in there somewhere under all the craziness.  There's some social commentary in there somewhere that has to do with the problems of youth in Japanese society, and the perils of technology and mass culture.  I think.  After the scene where the evil transvestite sings his crazy death rock song in the bowling alley, while girls in bags writhe around on the floor, my mind was totally blown.

In summation, Suicide Club is a well made, unsettling, and incredibly gory film.  You won't want to watch it if you're at all squeamish about blood and gore, or if you're interested in a coherent plot.  If like me, you're a lover of blood-soaked craziness, this is the film for you.  Easily the most awesomely insane movie I've seen in a while.
