Sin City is pretty damn awesome. I saw Robert Rodriguez's adaptation of Frank Miller's influenced Sin City comics this past weekend, and to put it in Amazing Ben's terms, it made me want to go out and start face-kicking retards.
In terms of faithfulness to the source material, this is the best comic book adaptation I've ever seen. Using entirely digital backgrounds and shooting almost entirely in black and white, Rodriguez painstakingly recreates three of Miller's stories on the screen panel by panel. This is really the only way to film Sin City, because the stories are all your basic hard boiled, film noir, pulp fiction cliches exaggerated and stylized: sex, violence, lone fighters for justice against the corruption of the rich and powerful. They don't have the impact they need without Millers visual signature.
Sin City serves up just about every sordid thing you could want in a movie: murder, prostitutes, corrupt cops, cannibalism, serial killers, corrupt clergymen, prostitutes, Irish mercenaries, kung-fu prostitutes, pedophiles, corrupt senators, strippers, and prostitutes. One of the main themes of all the Sin City stories is violence, especially against women. Consequently this films sense of justice involves more guys getting their balls blown off than three Pam Grier movies. So don't watch if you're too sensitive to see a guy get capped in the nuts. Several times.
The first story, "The Hard Goodbye", is about a hulking ex-con named Marv (Mickey Rourke) and his attempt to avenge the death of a hooker named Goldie. I'm a fan of Mickey Rourke, so it's good to see him in a decent movie again. Who better to play a scarred, hulking freak?
My favorite story by far was the second one, "The Big Fat Kill", which is about Dwight (Clive Owen) and his girlfriend Gail (Rosario Dawson) and their loyal army of prostitutes. Every whore has her own theme: bondage hooker, ninja hooker, cowgirl hooker, and Zorro hooker. Its the most tongue-in-cheek of the three stories, what with the high concept hookers and some very silly death scenes. This one also has Benicio Del Toro, who's cool as all hell.
The last one, "That Yellow Bastard", was my least favorite. It's mostly humorless, and doesn't have the near constant violence of the other two to keep things moving. Nick Stahl is pretty good as the Yellow Bastard, and Powers Boothe has a small role as his even more evil Senator father. And Jessica Alba is very hot.
This is the closest thing you'll ever see to a comic book coming to life. It looks amazing and the cast is great. It has tons of graphic violence, hot nude girls, a ninja hooker, and Benicio Del Toro's talking corpse. What more could you want? See it. I command it.
